This summer, I'm looking back at the most recent seasons of some of my favorite shows and posing a few hypothetical questions about their future in this feature, Five Questions. Today's questions are for "Ugly Betty," which will start its second season in the fall.

- What about those cliffhangers, huh? "Ugly Betty" had one of the most packed season finales around, and almost all the developments were bad, sad things: the possible deaths of several characters, Charlie's deception of Henry, Claire escaping, etc. It was a pretty dark episode, very well-done but more dramatic than anything we've seen from "Ugly Betty," and I'm curious to see what the writers will come up with to get us out of such a seemingly tragic situation.
- Can the show maintain its tone? "Ugly Betty" made its mark by blending over-the-top campy elements, great physical and verbal humor, and occasional heavy drama. Hmm, sounds like how I used to describe "Desperate Housewives." And yet that show took a serious turn for the worse in its second season when it introduced characters and story lines that didn't fit the show's established tone. How will "Ugly Betty" avoid that pitfall?
- Can the show get new viewers? Like almost every show, "Ugly Betty" took a serious plunge in the ratings when it returned from hiatus in the spring. The show benefited in its first season from being the lead-in to "Grey's Anatomy," but "Grey's" has turned off enough viewers that it might not be the draw it once was. Even at its worst, "Betty" still did better than most first-season shows, but I wonder if its audience can grow.
- Will the Fey Sommers mystery be solved? The off-again, on-again centerpiece of the show was the question of who killed Mode's former editrix-in-chief. I often grew tired of the plot line and worried it wasn't going anywhere, but every time I'd start rolling my eyes at the mention of Fey's name, the writers came up with some new twist to draw me back in — most recently the suggestion that Fey could be Amanda's mother. Still, this strikes me as another thing the show has in common with "Desperate Housewives," which couldn't keep a mystery going beyond its first season. Does the show have enough going for it at this point to let that story drop?
- Will Betty ever change? I keep waiting for the episode when Betty gets her braces off, cuts her hair, dresses well and makes a splash at Mode — a transformation that would be inevitable if "Ugly Betty" were a movie. Of course, that's against the whole framework the show has set up so far, and the writers seem pretty committed to keeping Betty as a plain, brace-faced underdog. Still, I wonder if they'll ever be tempted to make Betty just a little prettier, or a little less dorky, or a little more mainstream, just to see what happens.
Three more questions, so read more

Love me some Ugly Betty. I think the show will continue to gain audience. America Ferrera is relatable in interviews and she's really pretty. I think it will be fine.
1Good questions.
2I love Ugly Betty. The season finale was so sad!! I cant wait til season 2 starts!
3Oh I LOVE Ugly Betty....and I think I'd actually be disappointed if they made Betty "pretty" and sophisticated. I adore her the way she is, shes so adorable and real, you just want her to succeed. I hope the show lasts. I love Amanda too, she's hilarious
4Well in the original Colombian telenovela they prettied her up. They did it in bits though - one week she got a haircut, the next week she got smaller glasses, then clear braces, etc. At five episodes a week it took a long time. She never really became "sophisticated" though. She still retained her awkwardness, and her distinctive laugh.
But the thing about a telenovela is it's meant to end, so I dont know what they're going to do on this show if they want to keep it going. Besides, the storyline they have been managing is COMPLETELY different from the original, basically the only similar thing is the concept.
5Excellent questions, Buzz. Resolution to the season ending cliffhangers should keep us going for awhile; hopefully, the writers will not allow the stories to drag on so that they outlive the viewers' interest. Betty may experiment with some physical makeovers, but she'll likely retain the wit and wisdom that makes her such a rich, non-mainstream character. Each of the characters has such a distinct personality; let's hope they don't lose their uniquenesses as well. Grey's may lose some viewers next season, so Betty will have to stay strong in character and plot. I have faith that it will. It's such a great show!
6I don't think anyone should emotionally invest so much w/ Fey. The plot is not that central. Besides, the show revealed Mrs. Meade as the killer (Didn't they?). I love how Amanda is likely Fey's daughter since she'll likely be challenging for domination at the magazine.
The show is not Desperate Housewives (thank God) since the heart and soul of the show was not the Fey mystery but the relationships, especially re: the Suarez and Meade families (especially considering the season finale). Don't worry: the only thing wrong about the original telenovela was the ending in which not only Betty had been changed to a gorgeous woman (the actress was beautiful) but she also fell for her ass of a boss. The public felt betrayed b/c they looked to Betty as the embodiment of a woman whose self-worth was not based on how men perceived her, especially in a relationship (dutiful, obedient wife and self-sacrificing mother).
7Oooh, good one.
8I should amend one thing: it wasn't that the original Betty was changed physically so much as that she got involved with a man not worthy of her.
9I think the show is rather redundant, but the receptionist is a hottie!
10I really don't know how I'm going to live until the fall without this show. When I was sick for a week, all I did was lay around and watch the whole season TWICE! I'm still not sick of it , its crazy.
11She's GawJus Out Of The Braces And The Dorky Clothes
But She's So Sweet I Remember Reading In A Magazine
She Said She Didnt Realise How Ugly She Was Until
She Got The Pary " Which Is So Sad!
Because She Isnt Ugly!
Who Got To Deciede What ugly!
EveryOne Is Bueatiful.. It Just Depends
Waht Your Attracted To.. In One Pers0ns Eyes

Ugly betty is just a remake of a already sucessful Telenovela in most of latin America. The story line is ready for next year without them having to do too much.
If they make Betty prety i would stop watching it. I love her the way she is. She is comfortable with herself. that's the whole point of the SHOW!
Also when the orginal show made her pretty the fans where in a up roar. It didn't go over well.
13I didn't watch many of the Ugly Betty Episodes, maybe one or two, but I tuned in to watch the season finale, and now I'm hooked. It was a great season ending show! And I can't wait for Season 2 now!
14ugly betty is so well written!! it always changes just when you think you know what is about to happen!! its really good! looking forward to series 2!
15i can't wait for season 2 to start!
16I really like the show, I hope it continues
